Expatriate/Repatriate Business Person Interview

Essay Instructions:

You will find and interview two to three people who are an expatriate or repatriate business person who has worked overseas. Their nationality is not important, but it is important that they have lived and worked in a country other than their own for at least a year. If you don't know anyone who has worked abroad, ask your classmates for referrals. The purpose of the assignment is to prepare you for the session on expatriates by providing you with personal exposure to expatriate and repatriate issues. This is a good opportunity to expand your professional network as well. A detailed interview protocol will be posted on Quercus. Take good notes on their answers so that you can report what they said in class. In addition, write a ~1500-word paper on what you learned that will be due on the Friday, Nov 11.
Hi Class, as requested (demanded!), here are some explicit guidelines the report:
A. Summarize your findings. For example:
1. What was it like for your interviewees?
2. What was similar/different among your interviewees?
You should think about how best to summarize your findings across your interviewees. You all have different combinations and number of interviewees - decide what is best for your case to make the findings clear, logical and understandable.
B. Analyze and reflect on your findings. You should consider discussing the following:
What surprised you most in the interview?
What was the most significant thing you learned?
Would you be a good candidate to work overseas? Why?
If you ever manage repatriates, how will you help them transfer their knowledge?
As always, if you can integrate the course readings and materials, that will help ground your report.
This is only a set of basic guidelines. It is likely/possible that you may have more compelling ways of presenting what you have learned from the interviews that I have not provided here. Use your good judgement.

Expatriate/Repatriate Interview
Introduction
The increasing rate of globalization across different sectors of the global economy correlates to the growing rate of international assignments among international or multinational corporations (MNCs) in equally diverse economic industries worldwide. The increasing rate of international projects in such entities results from the quest to achieve the key objective of sustainable growth and development amidst the increasingly competitive global economy. Business organizations are globalizing their operations by sending employees on foreign assignments to gain global knowledge and experience, promoting the business entity’s competitiveness in the global market. Such employees, referred to as expatriates, have to relocate temporarily to the parent organization’s foreign offices for at least 12 months. The knowledge and experience acquired by expatriates upon their repatriation to their home countries are integral to business organizations' sustainable growth and development. However, both expatriation and repatriation are characteristic of diverse elements or factors affecting their efficacy to achieve the desired outcome and objective of sustainable growth and development at the individual and organizational levels. For instance, an employee’s relocation to a foreign country may face cultural challenges limiting their ability to adjust to the host country and achieve the international assignment's desired outcomes. On the other hand, repatriates face the challenge of re-entry into their home country, which often limits their capacity to convert the acquired global knowledge and experience towards achieving the organization’s growth objectives. Provided herein is a reflection on some aspects characterizing expatriation and repatriation based on the summary findings of the responses from the interview of three repatriated business persons.
Summary of the Interviewee’s Responses
Feedback from the interviewees revealed some common ground in their experiences as expatriates to foreign countries and their re-entry into their home country while working for international organizations. All of them relocated to foreign countries to initiate training programs for the technical expertise needed to carry out the organization’s operational activities in the foreign country towards meeting the organization’s global operating standards. The three repatriate business persons worked as technical expatriates at different levels of their organizations in different countries, with one having worked abroad for 12 months and the other two interviewees having spent 18 months each in their respective host countries. According to the interviews, all three repatriates were selected for their expertise in executing the international assignment. The host countries lacked the technical expertise to perform the foreign assignment according to the organizations’ global standards.
Though the interviewees had different experiences relating to their adjustments in the various host countries, they seem to agree that acquiring cultural knowledge and experience is an integral factor for succeeding in ...
