Extensive evidence has revealed that gender significantly affects negotiations and bargaining. This evidence shows that the historical and social constructs of gender roles have had a tremendous impact on the role of gender in negotiations and bargaining (Toosi et al., 2019). In addition, the natural biological, social, and emotional differences may also have some effects on the role of gender in negotiations and bargaining. There are three main factors that can be considered when aiming to come up with the specific effects of gender on negotiations and bargaining. The three are gender stereotypes, gender roles, and gender bias.
Gender stereotypes affect the trajectory of negotiations and bargaining in most cases. These stereotypes revolve around the general expectations and beliefs about how men and women should carry themselves during negotiation or bargaining sessions. Men are expected to be more assertive, confident, and competitive in driving across their points (Toosi et al., 2019). On the other hand, women are considered to be more caring, less assertive, and less attracted to competition. Therefore, during negotiations, ideas put across by men are likely to dominate and carry the day as opposed to those suggested by women. Although things have changed considerably, and ideas of women count more in modern societies, there are still widespread notions about the role of women (Toosi et al., 2019). Therefore, there are likely to be numerous contexts where the ideas of men are likely to carry the day in negotiation.
