1. Consider the following hypothetical example: An American college seeks to obtain a good image among Chinese educational regulators and accreditors by inviting a number of them, all expenses paid, to a week-long conference in Hawaii. Is this morally acceptable? Does it constitute a form of bribery? Why or why not? *(My thought is to answer is question case by case, it actually depends on different circumstance and the way you do it.)
Bribery mainly comprises giving or offering something in the hope of influencing the actions of someone. It can happen directly or indirectly but the intention at the end of the day is to try and make sure someone’s actions are changed to fit with the wishes of the one giving. First of all, what the American college is doing is not morally acceptable and constitutes a form of bribery. As already explained, an act is considered a bribe when the intentions of one party are to influence the actions of another party. The American college is trying to enhance its image in the eyes of the Chinese educational regulators and accreditors. The obvious way to do this is to invite the regulators to the school and have them see for themselves how the college is a credible education spot. The college could, therefore, offer the regulators and accreditors a trip to the school and make their point through their services and quality of education. However, inviting the team to an all expenses paid, week-long conference in Hawaii is going past what is considered normal to bribery.
To showcase or prove that bribery has occurred, one must showcase a quid pro quo type or kind of relationship. With such a relationship, the exchange of something is dependent upon another. It simply means a favor for another. In the case presented, the American college is trying to have its image or reputation enhanced in the eyes of the Chinese education regulators and accreditors. So, it is doing what may be considered a favor to the visitors in the hope that the visitors will help it grow or enhance its reputation. Here, it is easy to prove the favor for a favor relationship between the college and the visitors. If the visitors did not have the power they have, it is unclear whether the college would have done the same thing. The college knows that its attraction to the Chinese students is dependent on what the regulators and accreditors say about them. A great report from the regulators and accreditors means that the college will attract more students from China. So, this case does constitute bribery because the college is acting out of a need to influence the actions of the regulators and accreditors.
2. What is the best way to make sure the workers in factories are treated fairly? Can you come up with one detailed proposal? *(You could use your approach. I don't have a preference here)
One way to ensure all workers are treated fairly in factories is to eliminate all forms of discrimination. The Cambridge Online Dictionary defines the term discrimination as “treating a person of particular group of people differently, especially in a worse way from the way in which you treat other people, because of their skin colo...
