Stomach ulcers are open sores that develop on the walls of the stomach. They are also commonly referred to as gastric ulcers, which are a type of peptic ulcers. Peptic ulcers can occur in the intestines just outside the stomach wall. The pain happens mostly when one is on an empty stomach. Stomach ulcers can be prevented by eating healthy and other treatment measures.
Peptic ulcers result from an accumulation of acid in the peptic tract, destroying the inner layer of the abdominal or the ileum. Stomach ulcers are commonly caused by a bacterium known as Helicobacter, frequent consumption of certain painkillers, stress or certain foods (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2018). A bacterium known as Helicobacter survives within the self-lubricating layers that shield and safeguard the tissue along the inner lining of the stomach and the small intestines. The Helicobacter pylorus leads to the burning of the inner layers of the stomach, resulting in ulcers. The Helicobacter pylori bacteria may be transmitted through personal contact such as kissing. In addition, smoking, drinking alcohol, and eating spicy food increase the risk of stomach ulcers (U.S National Library of Medicine, 2018).
Individuals experience different symptoms, with some having no signs at all. Accumulation of acid in the stomach causes a burning or dull pain that finally results in peptic ulcers. This is usually the most common symptom of stomach ulcers. Other...
