Alan Lomax spent a significant part of his life collecting, analyzing, and archiving folksongs and other types of music in America. He began his career assisting his father. After working under his father for a few years, Lomax eventually became the Assistant in charge of the Library of Congress archives. While working for the Library of Congress, Lomax traveled the country and recorded thousands of records. As he worked to bring American folk music to the masses, Lomax also published several books, including “Our Singing Country” and “American Ballads and Folk Songs.” To bring folk music to the masses, Lomax produced radio shows for the Columbia Broadcasting System. Regulars on his programs included Crawford Seeger, Burl Ives, and Lead Belly. While working with Belly, Lomax realized the importance of documenting the stories behind the music as well. He, therefore, pioneered the oral histories of vernacular musicians, which included recordings with legendary folk singers such as Memphis Slim, Sonny Boy Williamson, and Ver Ward Hall.
Outside the radio station, Lomax worked with concert organizers in various cities to bring folk music to the stage. One of the landmark concerts was held in New York’s Forrest Theater in 1940.
