Press Release. THE PORCELAIN TEAPOT American Art and Heritage (Essay Sample)

Instructions:

Work divided into 2 individual parts, 200-300 words each, please do not include any personal information
Part 1: Many galleries, museums, schools, libraries, auction houses, and other institutions archive press releases on their websites. Browse through the websites of museums or galleries that you admire, looking for press releases that you would like to share with the class. You may select a press release because it pertains to an artist you like, because you find it to be well-written, because you find it problematic, or perhaps because it was written in a style that we have not yet encountered. Download a pdf of the press release from the website or copy and paste the text into a document and post it to our discussion page. Tell the class why the press release stood out to you and assess whether or not you find it to be effective. Read through the examples posted by your classmates and comment accordingly.
Part 2: Has reading/seeing Berger’s book changed how you think images “work”? Say why or why not, but make sure to include the definition or interpretation of “work” that you are using when you respond. Propose which images you might see most differently after reading Berger’s book, and why Berger’s analysis particularly affects them. (On pg. 9-10, Berger writes, “An image is a sight which has been recreated or reproduced. It is an appearance, or a set of appearances, which has been detached from the place and time in which it first made its appearance and preserved—for a few moments or a few centuries. Every image embodies a way of seeing.”)
