Introduction
Liliana Porter’s Untitled (with Fallen things) is perhaps one of the most intriguing pieces of art that I’ve ever seen. It showcases a canvas that is mostly smooth and white for about one-third of the whole piece but also has a lot of assemblages and details on the remaining parts. Even though the white parts of the piece is noticeable for its dominance in terms of size, I believe that this provided a good contrast for the other parts, which are vividly colored and exquisitely detailed with different miniature pieces of machinery, tools, vehicles, photos, and even animal figures. In line with this, I believe that Porter has explicitly used a combination of strokes, focal points, and color in order to vividly create an interrelation between reality and the viewers’ imagination, and guide their perceptions towards the image that she is trying to portray.
To start with this analysis, I tried to look first if the piece was showcased in a specific way, yet I wasn’t able to notice a special technique in terms of lighting or positioning. It was simply presented with the piece as the main attraction with no additional external visual methods. Mainly, Porter’s piece is simply a white canvas with additional details added onto it using toys and figurines, as well as paint and adhesives.
In retrospect, I believe that what made the art piece more intriguing is that creates a mental picture of a ‘wreckage’ or an ‘accident’, which was made more pronounced through the white background.
