Three Musical Albums that Have Impacted my Life

Essay Instructions:

Part of the goal of this class is to help us understand why we care about the music we listen to, and to understand the process by which popular music is both affected by, and in turn impacts upon, the culture it emerges from and ultimately becomes a part of.
For this paper, choose THREE full-length albums (1. Born This Way by Lady Gaga, 2. An Evening With Silk Sonic by Silk Sonic, 3. At Last by Etta James) that have made a difference in your life, with the following requirements:
1. All three should fall within the parameters of pop music (NO classical or jazz albums, please), and all three must be distinct from each other in terms of general style (in other words, do NOT pick three metal albums or three hip-hop albums, etc.)
2. 1. At least one of the collections must contain music more than ten years old (recorded and released no later than 2012), and at least one of the collections must contain music less than five years old (recorded and released no earlier than 2017).
For each album, discuss the following:
1. What were the roots and origins of the music--what tradition or movement did the artist(s) emerge from, and how did they reflect, extend, or alter that tradition or movement, either musically or culturally – or both?
2. What does each work say to you, specifically, that has caused it to stand out in your life?

Three Albums that Have Impacted My Life
Born this Way by Lady Gaga
"Born this way" is a song by Lady Gaga released in 2011. The song is based on self-liberation and self-love, which entails loving every part of oneself regardless of gender, sexual orientation, and race. The concept of Lady Gaga encouraging individuals to accept themselves the way they are indicate that the music originates from the racial discrimination against African Americans in the United States. Historically, African Americans have faced prejudice from the whites regarding the blacks as inferior and ignorant individuals who do not deserve any position and place in the country. The album asserts, "… you're black, white, beige...Lebanese… (Gaga, 2011, 0:59). Thus, people should acknowledge themselves.
The women have faced gender discrimination in places of work as they are considered weak vessels who deserve to spend their entire time within the house, caring for the children and cooking for the family. Lady Gaga's album reflects on individuals abusing one another due to race and gender, indicating that the artist is a victim of African culture, which forced her to stand out and encourage fellow Africans to accept themselves regardless of what they experience in society. Thus, through the song, Gaga informs people that it does not matter because they cannot change how they were born and therefore should liberate themselves from the negative thoughts caused by other people within the society who discriminates against others. The album's message on self-acceptance reminds me of the importance of loving oneself to promote self-esteem. The song asserts, "don't be a drag, just be a queen" (Gaga, 2011, 0:45). Self-esteem enables one to engage in various activities which others may perceive to be complicated. For instance, self-acceptance would facilitate the African-Americans to live a happy life even if they face racism and discrimination from the whites.
An Evening with Silk Sonic by Silk Sonic
"An evening with Silk Sonic" is a song by Silk Sonic released in 2021. The Silk Sonic features two artists, Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak. The album consists of nine amazing crafted songs which reveal romance and work to bring out the old-school funk and soul. As the film begins, it uses a four-count to introduce the harmony popularly utilized in the 1970s and 80s. The album also features a solo electric guitar which is paired with horns....
