The Piano Recital Critique

Essay Instructions:

Your critique should include the following elements:
The date, time and location of the recital--or the date and time you watched the performance on Youtube.
The name of the performer
The names and dates of the pieces performed, and the names of the composers who wrote those pieces.
Did any of the pieces have individual movements (smaller sections) listed on the program?
What are the meanings of any titles of pieces or titles of movements?
Compare the styles of the different pieces on the program. How do pieces written earlier in time sound different from pieces written later in time? You should talk about dynamics, tempo, and the ways in which the piano is used. Is the piano used to make song-like melodies, or is it being used for rhythmic effect? Are lots of notes used at the same time, or just a few? Are both rhythm and melody happening at the same time? Be sure to talk about all the pieces on the program.
From your own knowledge of piano playing so far, describe the physical approach that the performer had to the piano. Describe the performer’s posture, movement, and overall use of their body.
What parts of the recital did you really like? Why? Be sure to talk about aspects of the music here—talk about the pieces in terms of melody, rhythm, tempo, dynamics and so on. You can also talk about the performer’s interpretation.
What parts of the recital did you enjoy less? Why? Again, be sure to give details about the music and the performer.
One of the main jobs of a pianist is to make sure that the audience can hear the melody (when there is one)—even when there are lots of other things happening in the music. How did this pianist succeed in the pieces on this program?

Martha Argerich performed several piano recitals around Paris. I watched some of her performances on the YouTube on 3rd August 2018 at 4:30 pm. The names of the recitals were ‘’Sonata in D Minor K.141 and Sonata in D Minor for cello and piano.’’ The first repertoire was performed by Angerich in 1978 while the second one in 1915. The composers of the two recitals were Domenico Scarlatti and Claude Debussy respectively. However, Misha Maisky also contributed in the second recital as a cellist. The knowledge I gained in class will help me in analyzing the recital.
The performance of some recitals requires individual movement which can be observed on the performers. The movements may be in some parts or the whole performance. Angerich and Maisky showed individual movements in some parts of their performance in ‘’Sonata in D Minor for cello and piano.’’ The pianist and cellist moved their heads in harmony with the rhythm produced. The movements involved sitting straight when playing low notes and bowing on the piano to concentrate on the pitches produced when playing a quick melody (‘’Martha Argerich in Paris,’’ 1983).
Further, Angerich tries to adjust her position to reach every key on the piano while Maisky constantly moves his body in harmony with the melody produced. However, Angerich did not show much body movement when performing ’’Sonata in D Minor K.141.’’ The performer tends to concentrate on the keyboard from the start to the end without much change in body position.
The first performance is Jazz style music. The pianist uses uniform sounds that produced a harmonized melody. The music can be played during Christmas celebrations and other holidays. Contrarily, the second performance is very fast with high notes. However, the speed of the music varies in between where it sometimes increases and decreases to give un-harmonized melody. Currently, pieces made are paying much attention to the rhythm and harmonic nuances. The traditional music produced had different melodies and velocity without considering any systematic flow of the sound produced. Also, the traditional pieces had a fast and varying velocity of the note produced which is in contrary to modern ones that are used majorly for rhythmic effect. Most of the trad...
