Given that music has existed since time immemorial, it combines some older aspects with new approaches. Modern music relies more on post-1800 aspects while borrowing some concepts from the pre-1800 era.
Old System of Art
The concept of patronage is widely used today. Before 1800, the creation of artistic works including music relied on support, where a wealthy individual would commission works. The patron would hire composers or artists as employees and allow them to exercise their creativity. The patrons would play a critical role in determining how the final product would be. In today’s world, the concept of patronage is still used. In this case, a recording label or a publishing company sign artists. The company caters to the expenses of the artists. It also directs the manner in which the artists should produce their content. Recording labels take advantage of the financial position and connections to sign up artists. While before 1800s the patron would be a wealthy individual, in the modern world the patron is a company. However, the concept of patronage remains the same.
