Forms. Protestant church music has two important forms, namely, hymn and cantata. Hymns are poetic songs praising God, while cantata refers to a composition usually comprising duets, solos, choruses, and sung to an instrumental accompaniment. By contrast, Catholic music takes the form of Gregorian chant, motet, and organum. The Gregorian chant is a monophonic or unison liturgical music that accompanies the text of the mass. Motet refers to a piece of music sung during church service by a choir without deploying any instruments. Organum refers to a polyphonic form of sacred chanting witnessed between the eighth and 13th centuries.
