The Construction of Music
Music is constructed using a combination of seven essential elements; melody, harmony, rhythm, form, texture, expression, and timbre. Melody refers to the recognizable sequence of pitches in a piece of music, harmony refers to the way pitches within a song are combined and arranged, rhythm refers to the pattern of beats and the way those beats are accented, texture describes how the melody and harmony interplays within a piece of music, form describes the given shape and structure of a given piece of music, expression describes the tempo of a beat and the dynamics of a given music composition, and timbre refers to the unique qualities of a particular instrument or voice that gives it its distinct sound (Bailey, 2016). The seven elements can be applied to music produced by all cultures, with the variation in produced music being a consequence of how different cultures produce a given piece of music. Manipulation of the seven elements of music provides music composers with differing ways of expressing given ideas or music.
