Depiction of the Subject Matter: Picasso’s Man with a Guitar

Essay Instructions:

Please provide a formal analysis of Picasso’s Man with a Guitar (1912) following the explanations and instructions below. (You can find it here: https://www(dot)philamuseum(dot)org/collection/object/51090)
A formal analysis is an analysis of the forms utilized in an artwork and how they affect depiction of the subject matter. The following questions might be helpful in identifying the visual and formal elements in the work of art: How has the artist organized the piece? Is it symmetrical? How does the eye move across the work? Is there focal point? Is there a sense of movement? Here are a few formal elements to consider in your analysis--however, don’t feel pressured to include all of them, as they may not be relevant to every analysis:
Line (horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curved)
Composition (symmetry, negative space)
Texture (medium, etching, cross-hatching)
Depth (two-dimensional, three-dimensional, picture plane)
Color (hue, value, saturation, primary/secondary, complementary, warm/cool)
Shape and Form (organic, geometric)
Line (contour lines, width of lines, lines of direction or movement)
Light and Shadow (contrast, shading, cross-hatching)
Figures (Are there figures? Is the figure a person? What is their demeanor?)
Abstraction vs. Representational
Technique (linear, painterly)
You should have a thesis statement which suggests your interpretation of the work. A thesis statement should let the reader know how the artist’s formal choices affect the viewer. While you can mention your own emotional response to the piece, you should make sure to back it up with evidence and cite the formal qualities that caused the reaction.

Picasso’s painting Man with a Guitar (1912) shows a man holding guitar, and the guitar is at the center, but they appear fragmented and abstracted, and the proportions are distorted. The cubist artwork is also an abstract art piece, unlike realist art that represented nature. There is more focus on the shapes, angles, and lines rather than the form and color. The appearance seems fragmented as different shapes are juxtaposed together while focusing on multiple viewpoints. Breaking down the man and guitar figure into different geometrical forms shapes and the use of monochromatic shades of gray and brown are the main elements in Picasso’s painting.
Picasso organized the painting by decomposing the man and guitar figures into different planes and recomposing them from different angles. The image of the man and the guitar object is not symmetrical, where the angles distort the features and body shape. The figure and object are fragmented into square and angular shapes.
Picasso did not focus too much on depth, and it is challenging to capture the three dimensions on a two-dimensional canvas. Instead, Picasso captures all the dimensions from a single plane, which resulted in multiple perspectives such that all parts of the man and the guitar were represented on the same plane. Therefore, the painting should be viewed from multiple perspectives as viewers have to ...
