The Beggar’s Opera
The Beggar’s Opera is made by John Gay and it is a ballad type of opera because it was very popular in 18th century England. The composition is a blend of satirical play and opera, and even if it followed a lot of conventional operas, this one does not have a recitative. The Beggar’s Opera is a very good demonstration of this style, using music inspired by broadsheet ballads, folk songs, opera arias, and church songs. This came out in 1728 and Christoph Pepusch was the music arranger.
The Beggar’s Opera is Newgate Pastoral because, similar to comedy, the tone and meaning irrevocably shifts from the last part of the 17th century up to the beginning of the 18th century. It is sometimes referred to as ‘simple’ to ‘complex’ pastoral.
