The 2008 economic meltdown prompted the introduction of new banking industry regulations. New regulations coupled with a number of macro-economic forces drove Goldman Sachs’ change strategy. Following the financial crisis, the U.S government introduced new industry regulations and further strengthened the existing rules to avert a repeat of the meltdown. The meltdown adversely impacted on the Mortgage Based Securities (MBS). A damaged mortgage market meant that Goldman Sachs had to devise a change strategy that would spur growth and recovery in the aftermath of the financial crisis (Gupta & Simonds, 2017). As part of the economic stimulus package, Goldman Sachs received financial assistance from the US government. To comply with the new regulations, Goldman Sachs had to change its structure from an investment bank to a bank holding company. This change introduced additional costs. This is an important change driver since new industry regulation and macro-economic forces had altered both the internal and external operating environment (Gupta & Simonds, 2017).
