The Fraud that Occurred and its Impact
Apple Inc. is a firm that has been a victim of cybercrime. The company is recognized as a designer, manufacturer as well as a marketer of media devices, mobile phones, and personal computers. Apple's unique product tends to be the iPhones, which typically enjoys a specific status for having ultra-security and being difficult to hack. It is for this reason that cybercriminals are less interested in hacking this product. Nevertheless, the company faced a complex cyber-attack targeting Apple's iCloud service in China with a plan of collecting users' passwords, names as well as additional private information.
Google's team of researchers notified Apple of susceptibilities that continued for two years permitting hackers to insert malware on iPhones once people searched precise websites. Google exposed five exploit-chains that connect security susceptibilities and allow hackers to reach every security protection layer constructed into an operating structure. The exploit was able to take advantage of fourteen complete security errors that authorized cybercriminals to get total control of the iPhone after implanting the malware.
The criminals could see every database file on the phone. The moles could read information from protected messaging apps such as WhatsApp. They observed the content in plain text. Moreover, the hack sanctioned the cybercriminals to see content kept in iPhone's keychain like certificates and passwords. Once an affected iPhone was restarted, the malware got deleted off the device. Nonetheless, the criminals could still utilize the keychain information after the malware was not on the phone.
It was even more worrying that these hackers could access live location information from a client's device. One of the teardown posts regarding the attack displays how hackers could effectively read private messages from a user's phone. Additionally, it indicates that after every sixty seconds, the malware implant demanded commands from a command and control server.
Impact on the Corporation's Investors and Creditors
Typically, once a company faces such a challenge, the brand's name is damaged. In the case of Apple, the investors panicked and became wary. The trust level that the investors and creditors had for the company dropped, thus preventing increased investment. Even though the company did a good job of defending its name and products, this did not prevent a drop in the firm's stock value at the time. The investors also sold their shares because it was estimated that the stock's value would go down. Finding an investor during that time would have been extremely difficult for Apple.
How a Financial Forensic Investigation Could Have Detected Fraud in the Organization
A financial forensic investigation could have recognized the crime by analyzing the financial records of clients and the company to discover proof of the cybercrime that could be used in a court of law. The procedure could involve data collection, data preparation, analysis, as well as reporting. The client's complaints could also be of great significance in this ...
