Please watch the video:

After watching the video, for 24 hours...

  • Download a screen time app (Freedom, Moment, Flipd, THRIVE, Siempo etc.) to see how much time you spend on your phone before, during and after this exercise.
  • Put your phone on Grayscale. (Settings > General > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut (bottom) > Color Filters or find that setting for your device)
  • Turn off all notifications (except from apps where real people want your attention; e.g. Phone & messaging apps, WhatsApp, FB Messenger etc.)
  • Limit your first page of apps to no social media and just tools (e.g. Maps, Camera, Calendar, Notes etc.)
  • Launch other apps by typing instead of opening them from home screen. (typing takes just enough effort to make us pause and ask)
  1. What do think about your experience in this exercise?
  2. What 3 things surprised you the most?
  3. How did your screen time vary before, during and after this exercise?
  4. What did you learn from this exercise about MIS’s influence on our lives?

Phone Usage Exercise
My Thoughts about the Experience in this Exercise
Many people may initially find this practice difficult because they are used to checking their phones frequently and being inundated with notifications. However, it can also be immensely liberating and enable more deliberate usage of the gadgets. This practice can help individuals understand how technology influences their lives. Limiting mobile information systems (MIS) may be worth the effort and self-control. People may develop a more thoughtful and healthy connection with their devices by disabling notifications, limiting access to social media, and being more deliberate about how they use technology. The activity can improve focus, creativity, and a stronger sense of presence in people’s daily lives.
