Adaptibility of Leaders and Leading in Different Environments

Coursework Instructions:

Provide a 150 word minimum response to each of the 2 postings of the classmates in regards to questions A and C.

Please note you can agree or disagree in your response with any of the responses from the classmates as long as you back it up with explanation and facts. You must use at least 1 source from class readings for each response at minimum and 2 other sources from class or outside of class.

In-text citations must be done in accordance with Global College Style Guide attached and not APA. (Questions A and C responses below have done citations appropriately).

Note:  “You should be addressing and engaging with your classmates directly vice just critiquing what they wrote as the rest of the class did”. This is what my professor said, so please keep in mind when responding.

QUESTION A: In your reading, Training Adaptable Leaders, the author emphasizes the importance of leaders being mentally, interpersonally, and physically adaptable. In each of the three following scenarios below would one of these three forms of adaptability be more important for a leader to master than the others? If yes, describe which would be more important. If no, why not?

Commander of a:

  • Coalition force in Iraq
  • Joint force assisting FEMA in Hurricane Katrina operations
  • Combat force conducting irregular warfare operations
  • QUESTION C: Leading in different environments.

Leading in different environments and at different levels requires different skills (competencies). Leading military forces in a civilian humanitarian or international nation building missions and environment brings requirements to coordinate with non-military organizations: FEMA, Red Cross, GGOs, State Police, Immigration & Customs Enforcement, and potentially many others. Based on your readings and your experience are there leadership challenges that you face that you do not encounter when leading in a purely military environment? If so what are the challenges and how does your leadership differ? If no, why not?

Justify and support your answer using your experience and source support from the assigned readings.

Such a capacity enables them to make war-related decisions (Krulak 1999, 5). It also indicates that they would have to rely more on their mental adaptability in situations they are not trained but where their military skills can emerge advantageous such as in humanitarian response cases (Coats 2005, 7). Such circumstances indicate they would also require physical adaptability in combat situations without prior training. These circumstances demo...
