The Prodigal Son
The parable of the prodigal son is one of the most famous of the parables given by Jesus to His disciples and the Jews. Just as with all parables given by Christ, the parable of the prodigal son held a much deeper meaning, as opposed to being just an interesting story. Theologians can pick up various themes from this parable, but undoubtedly the main theme of the story is forgiveness.
Based on the parable in Luke 15:11-32, while the younger son is a servant in a foreign country due to his mistakes, he considers his plight, and although he feels the weight of his sins, he still decides to let go of his pride, go back to his father, and repent. The father is so greatly pleased with the return of the son he is not only willing to forgive the sin, but he also orders a banquet in honor of the returned son. The context in which this parable was given was based on the reaction of the Pharisees to Christ’s welcoming nature towards those whom the Pharisees considered to be great sinners.
