The Tale of Two Regions: A Deep Dive into Nunavik and Saskatchewan's Ecological Jewels

Coursework Instructions:

Directions: To begin thinking about the Nature Journal and Final Project, you’ll choose a location to create a practice Nature Journal entry.
Grading Criteria: Nature Journal entries will be graded on:
Detail of responses, including - length of responses (approx. 2-3 paragraphs each), specific examples, personal examples, examples, data, and details from quality sources, connections with lectures and other course materials, etc.
Credit given to sources, including - footnote citations (Author, Title, Link), mention of which text/source is being referred to in writing, etc.
Thoughtful reflection, including - critical consideration of the prompt, inclusion of personal reflections, reviewing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges of a proposed solution or source, etc.
Artistic response, including - original drawing, sketch, collage, or other creation; art piece/media by another artist with attribution/citation
NB: This collection of videos from Pratt Libraries can be helpful for your research, citations, etc.
NATURE JOURNAL ENTRY #3
Name:
Location:
For this entry, you’ll be identifying two species in your region: one extinct species, and one endangered species. It may be interesting to choose two very different types of organisms (ex: one plant and one animal; one terrestrial organism and one aquatic organism; one carnivore and one herbivore; etc.)
For each species, find out:
What is/was this species’ main source(s) of food, water, and habitat? What are three other organisms that this species interacts (or interacted) with, and in what way? (predator, prey, symbiotic relationship, etc.)
Which threat(s) to biodiversity (HIPPOC) pushed this species toward extinction? What is/was the extent of this threat for this species in your region? Include a specific measurement(s) or example(s) to support your response (ex: There has been a 33% decrease in wetland habitat for this species…)
Artistic Response Ideas: illustration of species you find in your search; a poster to raise awareness about the threats facing the species; a social media post highlighting why these species are/were important to the entire ecosystem...

Nunavik and Saskatchewan stand as contrasting embodiments of Canada's vast landscape. From Nunavik's icy embrace to Saskatchewan's verdant spread, these regions encapsulate the dichotomies of Mother Earth. Their diverse ecosystems have cradled myriad species, from the most obscure to the universally celebrated. However, in the face of human intervention and rapid global ecological changes, some species are precariously perched on the edge of extinction. In contrast, others have faded into the annals of history.
In the chilly depths of Nunavik's marine world, the narwhal, scientifically known as Monodon monoceros, thrives and dances. Dubbed the "unicorns of the sea" for their spiraled tusks, narwhals have inspired myths and tales that span continents (Loch et al., 2023). Delving deeper into their lives, one finds these creatures sustaining mainly on a diet of Arctic fish, with the Greenland halibut emerging as a particular favorite. The intricate balance of this ecosystem reveals the narwhal's links to several other species. As apex predators, killer whales have been known to target narwhals, while the gentle Beluga whales often share their migration paths.
Moreover, the Greenland halibut's dietary preferences, including zooplankton, play an unseen yet crucial role in the survival
