Effective Legal Practices: Leveraging Multiculturalism and Diversity
The growing multiculturalism in the legal market demands that law professionals show the ability and commitment to creating and maintaining an inclusive and diverse environment. Accordingly, the law profession is the least diverse in the United States. The report indicates the need for law firms and lawyers to incorporate strategies of diversification for efficient legal practices. The lawyers can take advantage of the multiculturalism to differentiate themselves and their business from others. Cases involving diversity and multiculturalism have emerged in courts, thereby requiring legal firms to be prepared. One such case is the Peterson v. Hewlett Packard Co. that was decided on 6th January, 2004. Currently, there is a need for law companies to create a brand that attracts clients. Studies indicate that diversity creates value that separates an entity from competitors.
One way that lawyers and law firms can leverage diversity to their benefit is through client pitches. The proposed method is a proactive approach of illustrating the law firm’s commitment to multiculturalism. In this case, the law company needs to research the diversity engagement of the client to get information that they can use to demonstrate some shared values. Additionally, the pitch teams that meet up with the clients should emulate the diversity expectations of the customer. Notably, the pitch group makeup should be in a way that it represents what the client views as diverse. Also, customer follow-up after the pitching is an important aspect that the law firms need to undertake. The process aims to understand the client’s diversity expectations and needs further and discuss ways to improve. The knowledge of the multiculturalism requirements of the customer enables the generation of more appropriate techniques that will set the firm apart from rivals. Additionally, partnering with the client in creating diversity goals enhances the interrelationship and corporate reputation as a whole. Also, this presents an opportunity for the lawyers or law firms to showcase their diversity commitment and programs.
