Etiology
Typhoid is a food-borne disease caused by Salmonella typhi bacteria. The bacteria thrive in the intestines of infected people and can be spread through the fecal matter of infected individuals. Consumption of food or water contaminated by bacteria results in infection (Staff Writer, 2018). Poor sanitation promotes the spread of Salmonella typhi. Practices such as not washing hands after visiting the toilet, taking untreated water, poor sewage treatment or leaking sewage, poor hygiene practices during meal preparation, and inadequate cooking of food can lead to infection. Touching contaminated water or fecal matter and handling food without washing hands thoroughly is a common way the bacteria spread.
