Study Guide for Psychotropic Medication Agents: Lurasidone

Coursework Instructions:

Create a study guide for your assigned psychotropic medication agents. Your study guide should be in the form of an outline with references, and you should incorporate visual elements such as concept maps, charts, diagrams, images, color coding, mnemonics, and/or flashcards. Be creative! It should not be in the format of an APA paper. Your guide should be informed by the FDA-approved and Evidenced-Based, Clinical Practice Guidelines Research but also supported by at least three other scholarly resources.

Areas of importance you should address, but are not limited to, are:

  • Title page
  • Description of the Psychopharmacological medication agent including brand and generic names and appropriate FDA indication uses
  • Any supporting, valid and reliable research for non-FDA uses
  • Drug classification
  • The medication mechanism of action
  • The medication pharmacokinetics
  • The medication pharmacodynamics
  • Mechanism of Action
  • Appropriate dosing, administration route, and any considerations for dosing alterations
  • Considerations of use and dosing in specific specialty populations to consider children, adolescents, elderly, pregnancy, suicidal behaviors, etc.
  • Definition of Half-life, why half-life is important, and the half-life for your assigned medication
  • Side effects/adverse reaction potentials
  • Contraindications for use including significant drug to drug interactions
  • Overdose Considerations
  • Diagnostics and labs monitoring
  • Comorbidities considerations
  • Legal and ethical considerations
  • Pertinent patient education considerations
  • Reference Page

Note: Support your rationale with a minimum of five academic resources. While you may use the course text to support your rationale, it will not count toward the resource requirement. You should be utilizing the primary and secondary literature.

Description of the Psychopharmacological Medication
The brand name is Latuda, and the generic name for the medication is Lurasidone. The following are some of the FDA indications of the medication.
* It helps in treating schizophrenia both in adults and adolescents who are aged between 13 and 17 years.
* Secondly, it can be used for monotherapy and conduction of adjunctive therapy, which handles the depressive episodes of individuals (Srisurapanont et al., 2021). These are depressive episodes that individuals who have bipolar 1 disorder face.
* There is also an adjunctive treatment, which combines lithium with the medication to treat bipolar 1 disorder.
* Note: This image was extracted from Drugs.com in 2023, and the figure shows the brand name and the generic name of the medication provided for the study. The link for accessing the video is https://www.drugs.com/pro/latuda.html.
Medication Classification
The drug is classified as Atypical Antipsychotic. These are drugs that [produce fewer levels of extrapyramidal symptoms when they are used in vulnerable clinical populations when controlling psychosis
Medication Mechanism of Action
The medication mechanism of action is to use the Dopamine D2 receptor (Siwek et al., 2023). Secondly, the Serotonin 5-HT2A receptor can also be used. These help in achieving the control of psychosis in the patient. The medication mechanisms are antagonists.
Medication Pharmacokinetics
In terms of absorption, the medication is well absorbed into an individual's body orally. Further, the drug is extensively distributed after absorption because it contains high protein binding, which allows for proper distribution. Metabolism of the medication is present, and it is primarily hepatic and can be eliminated from the human body through fecal matter.
Medication Pharmacodynamics
In pharmacodynamics, the medication is an antagonist for serotonin and dopamine receptors in the human brain (Javed et al., 2019). The application of the medication helps modulate the balance of these neurotransmitters in the brain, which is dopamine and serotonin neurotransmission.
Appropriate Dosing and Administration
There has to be appropriate dosing to ensure that individuals can get better treatment and medication without over or under-dosing. The initial dose for the medication is 40 mg/day for (schizophrenia) or 20 mg/day for (bipolar depression).
The administrative route of these medications is oral, and an individual can ingest the medication in combination with food.
