Bell Telephone, and later AT&T, was the pioneer of the telecommunications industry in the United States. They ran the first copper cable, manufactured the first telephone devices, and provided the first telephone service. With such a long history of success, it is no wonder that AT&T is still around today. Owning all of the existing telecommunications infrastructure made it impossible for competitors to enter the market. It was not financially viable for anyone to try and establish a parallel infrastructure (that is, bare the cost to bury thousands of miles of cable.) For this reason, the US government had to step in and AT&T eventually became a regulated monopoly. The company was then divested into seperate regional telephone companies.
1. Research AT&Ts history and provide the names of the regional telephone companies that it was divided into. Are those companies still in business today? Provide some examples as to whether or not the divesting of AT&T spurred growth and innovation. (one paragraph)
2. Microsoft was another example of a "monopoly." Research why the DOJ had to once again step in. Give your opinion on whether this was a necessary move. (Hint: some of you may remember Netscape Navigator) (one paragraph)
3.Please also write one paragraph for responses to two other students. ( I will post the responses from two students later)(the problem is the professor want students post the response first in order to see other students reviews. Because he doesn't want us copy each other's answer. I will post the responses from two students when i request the revision)

AT&T
The American Telephone and Telegraph Company were created in 1885, but due to a Federal antitrust lawsuit, the company was divided into various spin-offs of the Bell Telephone operating systems 1982. Among the divisions were Ameritech, Bell Atlantic, Bell South, NYNEX, Pacific Telesis, Southwestern Bell and US West. The divisions have mostly become part of Verizon communication or AT& T Inc. The divestment spurred growth as the spin-offs became successful on their own in a less regulated telecommunications environment. In 2006, AT & T acquired Bell South, and divesting allowed the divisions to compete with the original parent company. It was easier to commercialize the internet networks and improve the mobile environment when the company had various spin-offs. A T& T was divested and the company’s had divisions even in the communication equipment and services allowed T&T to maximize operations and innovation. However, one challenge to innovation was that the research labs were now smaller.
Microsoft
In 1997, The DOJ argued that Microsoft engaged in anti competitive behavior when they offered Internet Explorer (IE) as a “free” product while Netscape Navigator charged users, and Microsoft also built Windows to slow down the installation and download of Netscape Navigator. Microsoft’s actions were coercive as they were meant to force customers to abandon Netscape Navigator in favor of Microsoft. I agree with the decision as the company sought to control the browser market while restricting competition, and limited the products from other companies. Microsoft saw Netscape Navigator as a threat to its dominance and the company’s management sough to perpetuate a monopoly to be competitive than the rivals. A previous suit in 1994 alleged that Microsoft required companies to sign licensing and software agreements that limited competition in the operating system (OS) market.
