8.Rawls says people in the original situation would choose two specific principles of justice (pp. 13-14, 52). Summarize these two principles. To what extent do these principles seem reasonable to you?
The two specific principles discussed by Rawls were: (1) “equality in the assignment of basic rights and duties”, and (2) “social and economic inequalities, for example inequalities of wealth and authority, are just only if they result in compensating benefits for everyone, and in particular for the least advantaged members of society.” (Rawls 13).
The first principle means that essentially, all individuals should have equal rights. Since equal rights are the cornerstone of justice, this fundamental premise is quite straightforward and unambiguous. There is no reason why everyone should not have equal rights if everyone was created equally, which is something I believe to be true, unless one group thought they were superior, in which case there would be a whole other set of problems to deal with that justice alone could not resolve.
