3.Summarize Berlin’s concept of “negative freedom” in your own words. If people are unable to buy bread, under what conditions is that a restriction of their freedom, according to Berlin? (pp. 169-170)
Berlin’s concept of freedom became highly distinguishable when he discussed the notions of negative freedom and positive freedom. Traditionally, people view freedom as a concept or state of being “free” but in reality, the cause or the mechanism of that freedom can still be differentiated, as Berlin did, to demonstrate other factors such as will, capacity, intentions, and others. Berlin’s “negative freedom” is defined as the ability to do things with the absence of interference from other people (Berlin 170). As opposed to “positive freedom” where one is free because of being given opportunities to pursue things, negative freedom simply hinges on and is centered mostly on autonomy rather than opportunity, and this is the other way around from positive freedom....
