Article Title: Soft Hardware Heralds the Future of Textiles
Paragraph 1: Summary of the Article
MIT scientists have managed to embed optoelectronic devices such as light-emitting diodes and photodetectors into fabric fibers. These photosensitive devices were woven into flexible and washable fabrics resulting into smart fabric with communication capability (Soft Hardware para 2). This breakthrough invention advanced the existing preform LED diodes technology by enabling the production of minute micro-diodes equivalent to a grain of sand and a cross section smaller than the width of human hair. This invention was used to create smart fabrics by incorporating LED devices into fabric fiber. The discovery is expected to trigger Moore’s law phenomenon similar to that witnessed in the microchip industry (Soft Hardware para 2). Through heating, the fiber-drawing process led to partial liquification of the polymer to create LED diode embedded fabric fiber. The solid components used comprised of two types of standard devices made using standard microchip technology. The LEDs and other photosensing diodes were able to maintain a fixed dimension during the fiber drawing process when subjected to repeated laundry.
