In the early 1830s, Alexis de Tocqueville explored America on behalf of the French government to better understand the country’s prison system (Putnam 14) During this period, the United States was barely a half-century-old from its independence and was fledgling democracy. Most nations in Europe and across the globe looked up to the United States, which was full of participatory government and a constitution that secured liberty and equality of its citizens. The French aristocrat who coined the term individualism was aware of its dangers and was inspired by the United State’s profound protection of their independence by associating themselves deeply with it and engaging in collectively unselfish desires to solve problems and work together as a vibrant community, unlike other countries in Europe. Therefore, in the first chapter, Putnam revisits America’s history over the past 125 years since the last Gilded Age to determine whether the country has been moving towards a greater or lesser cohesion of social life, economic equality, compromise in politics, and cultural values (232).
