The author of the story the lottery uses various writing styles in his work .these writing varies from symbolism to the use of irony and illusion. Therefore in this paper, we shall discuss some of the writing styles used in the annotation story.
Use of symbolism
Symbolism uses symbols to represent a particular idea .these symbols can be places, human beings' names, objects, or even ideas. One has to pay attention to identify the use of symbolism. A comprehend understanding of the text is also necessary to interpret the symbols used. For in the lottery, there are many instances of the use of the symbolism
When he arrived in the square, carrying the black wooden box, there was a murmur of conversation among the villagers, and he waved and called, “Little late today, folks.” The postmaster, Mr. Graves, followed him, carrying a three-legged stool, and the stool was put in the center of the square, and Mr. Summers set the black box down on it. The villagers kept their distance, leaving a space between themselves and the stool. When Mr. Summers said, "Some of you fellows want to give me a hand?," there was a hesitation before two men, Mr. Martin and his oldest son, Baxter, came forward to hold the box steady on the stool while Mr. Summers stirred up the papers inside it.
Another instance of symbolism is the use of white slip papers.
"We're next," Mrs. Graves said. She watched while Mr. Graves came around from the side of the box, greeted Mr. Summers gravely, and selected a slip of paper from the box. By now, all through the crowd, men were holding the small folded papers in their large hands, turning them over and over nervously. Use of irony
The irony, which is one of many authors' writing styles, is the literal device where there is a contract between reality and expectation. It is a contraction of what is expected in reality. It can be humor or tragedy Irony is the vital energy that drives the plot onward. Shirley Jackson's usages of irony differentiate the dark certainty of what is nearly to take place in the community against the front of normality created by the peaceful background, the "elegant" people, and the peaceable time in June.
