Adapting to Climate Change - Outline

Coursework Instructions:

Please check reading materials that you need to use.

For this assignment, you will choose one of the required or optional readings assigned for January 27, and create a 2-page outline of the paper. The objective of this assignment is to help you identify the underlying structure of the paper, the specific points of evidence the author uses to advance their argument, and how these ideas are organized in their writing. By working backward from the final written paper, this assignment is meant to give you an understanding of how the basic organization of a paper relates to the final product. In this way, you might think about the assignment as recovering the “roadmap” or detailed “instructions” that must have guided the writing of the paper—the “skeleton” the author later fleshed out. Outlines should take a concise, bullet point structure. In your outline, you will lay out the structure of the paper, including the main arguments the author makes, and the supporting points and evidence they use to build these arguments. Use bullet-point hierarchies to your advantage in organizing information. Be succinct but complete in conveying the core details—avoid long, detailed sentences and short, uninformative phrases alike. On the latter point, for instance, make sure the bullet point is dense with useful and specific information. For example, “Large farmers internalize greater returns from conservation investments” is better than “Results by farm size;” “Adaptation mitigates the adverse effects of climate shocks” is better than “Behavioral responses.” The assignment should be 2 pages long, with 1-inch margins, in 11-point Times New Roman font, single-spaced. Be sure to include your name, and the title and author(s) of the paper you have chosen. The assignment is due in hard copy at/by the beginning of class on January 27, via Canvas or in hard copy. The assignment is worth 10% of your final grade.
