Socrates is esteemed for his life’s contributions and initiating an incredible line of thinkers by mentoring Plato, who subsequently mentored Aristotle. It is impossible to discuss philosophy without significantly citing the three thinkers properly. Thus, Socrates is appropriately described as the father of philosophy. Plato, as a mentee, has been indispensable in the understanding of Socrates’ ideas, given that Socrates did not commit to authorship. Through Plato, the scholarly community appreciates the ideas of Socrates in his books, such as Apology and the Republic. The devotion and brilliance of Plato in his works denote his reliability as a source and reflect on his mentor’s abilities.
One remarkable characteristic of Socratic philosophy is the appreciation of intellectualism. Socrates asserts that humans are only in their ideal state when they are knowledgeable and committed to pursuing knowledge. In this context, forsaking the pursuit, apathy, and conscious preference of ignorance are regarded as a malfunction. Worse than all the highlighted conditions for Socrates was intellectual hypocrisy. The Apology denotes the hypocritical condition as “reprehensible ignorance” (Plato 56). The ignorant individuals in this category believe that they are knowledgeable on subjects when they are clueless. It is an act of self-delusion. Socrates concluded that the “consciousness of ignorance is what the god meant by wisdom” (Plato 22).
