In the Foreword of Man’s Search for Meaning, Frankl states that the single most important factor influencing a person’s resiliency is a sense of the future and meaning in life. As he quotes Nietzsche: “He who has a Why to live, can bear almost any How.” Frankl states that you cannot control what happens to you in life but you can control how you respond to it. Is the Code of Conduct an adequate touchstone document to provide service members the necessary psychological stamina and meaning to cope with captivity? If yes, how? If no, why not and what should be changed or added?

According to Foreword, every person must find meaning in their lives so that they can be in a position to get themselves out of the difficult situation (Frankl, n.d., 1). This is because a lack of purpose or meaning in life makes people lose hope which may lead to death or living a meaningless life (Steger & Dik 2009, 303). In this paper, I will discuss why I believe. However, the code of conduct provides the necessary psychological stamina for soldiers to cope with captivity; there is a need to create more meaning in life beyond the work environment.
