The swift changes that were experienced in the industrial system in the late nineteenth century contributed to rapid and sudden changes in the religious, political and social structures which resulted in unseen and fearful revolutions. It is also important to note that the Gilded Age led to many problems which included unprecedented poverty, loosening of social mores, increased immigration and outbreak of political radicalism. This paper will examine how the minorities were treated during this time when the changes were evident also examine which groups were assimilated and segregated.
Both the farmers and workers had been waging in the political war against the capitalists and the political conservatives for a long time. However, by the end of the 19th century, a new generation of middle-class Americans interjected themselves into public life, and they demanded reforms which were key in taming the runaway of the Gilded Age. Throughout this time the minority groups were usually mistreated. These included the women, for example, in 1911, over 146 women died while over 71 got injuries after the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in Manhattan caught fire. The women had been looked inside the factory by their managers to prevent them from taking unauthorized breaks. Additionally, the girls who worked in factories were required to work for long hours under poor conditions. For example, the girls were required to operate the machines at night using the gaslight. Also, despite the long working hours, the girls were poorly paid, and they could earn $6 or $7 a week.[History Matters, 1912, "Hear TR’s Speech “The Liberty of the People”."
