Introduction
Every so often, people want to make records of the important moments in their lives and that of their loved ones. As such, the camera is one of the indispensable gadgets to most homes. The importance of the camera to the society can be best understood by looking at the current trend in the mobile gadgets industry. The camera is now a productivity gadget. Most of the security infrastructure uses the camera, as part of the visual application. The transport systems also apply the camera as one of the fundamental gadgets, which would explain why most of the road networks use the camera (Bellis, 2014).
History of the Camera and Photography
The science behind photography and thus cameras dates back to the 4th and 5th century. It was not until the 1000AD when the first camera was made by Alhazen. The camera was called the camera obscura. However the camera worked within eight hours of exposure of day light. The camera was based on light passing through a pinhole, with close reference to the optics principles observed by Aristotle in 330BC. Part of the inquest that led to the discovery of optics principles, was after Aristotle observed that, when light passed through a square hole it made a circular image(Bellis, 2014).
Images observed through the pinhole camera would be inverted. Later on in the 17th century, Isaac Newton one of the world’s renowned inventers, discovered that there are more than one colors in the white light and that these colors could be separated. Johann Heinrich Schulze, in the early 18th century discovered that, when exposed to light silver nitrate would turn dark. In the early 19th century, Joseph Nicephore Niepce was the first to make a photograph using the camera obscura.
Joseph Niepce made the first prototype of the modern camera, by using light to make images of objects in front of the camera. At the time, the process involved placing a metal plate that had a layer of bitumen on it, and letting light through another engraved plate. This meant that light would react with the areas hit by light. When dipped in a solvent the bitumen would react forming an image and it would disappear afterwards. Louis Daguerre later came up with a way to reduce the exposure time to 30 minutes and the image did not disappear afterwards (Bellis, 2014). Using silver coated copper plates and silver chloride solutions, Louis Daguerre, would make permanent images with light. Henry Fox Talbot then came up with the negative to positives process, using silver salt solutions on paper and exposing them to light. The negatives advanced from iron sheets to paper and later rolling films. Later in the 20th century the flashlights came to the scene and gave way to the digital cameras.
Economic Impact of the Camera
Historically, the economic impacts of the camera were quite low, as most of the time it was used in drawings and viewing objects. The developments of the film and digital photography have however revolutionized the impact of the camera in the economy.
