Chemical Weapons
According to Picard (2019), chemical weapons are made with the main objective of killing or incapacitating the enemy. Whether in liquid, solid, or gas form, when the chemical agents are released into the environment, they inflict damage on humans, plants, and animals. In modern warfare, the use of such harmful products in war was first reported in World War I. Chemical arms have continued to be employed, including in the Iran-Iraq war that took place from the 1980s to 1988. Further, different chemical agents continued to be deployed into weapons, including choking agents, blood agents, and blister agents. The paper will give a detailed description of chemical weapons and how they were produced in Egypt and the United States.
The first type of chemical weapon Picard (2019) depicts is choking agents. The German army first employed choking agents. It occurred in 1915 when Germany released chlorine, which was done from thousands of cylinders, leading to many casualties. Other gases that have been used as choking agents include diphosgene and phosgene. According to Green (2019), during World War I, phosgene gas was accountable for most of the deaths caused by chemical weapons. Second, the other type of chemical weapon is blister agents, which mainly entail mustard gas. Sulfur mustard can be delivered in either vapor or liquid form, and its main effects on humans are swelling of the lungs, skin, and eyes.
Thirdly, the other type of chemical weapon is the blood agents, which are mainly delivered to the target area in the form of vapor. They are mainly hydrogen cyanide or cyanogen chloride, and when inhaled, they deter oxygen from being transferred to various cells in the victim’s body. Another chemical weapon that is described as lethal is the nerve agent. Examples of nerve agents include sarin and tabun. According to Green (2019), when a few droplets of any of the two chemicals get into contact with a person’s skin, they cause instant death.
Additionally, due to the amount of damage caused by the use of chemical weapons in warfare numerous efforts have been employed to eliminate the production of this harmful chemical. Tannenwald (1999) demonstrates that despite the efforts, different nations continue to research and stockpile various chemical weapons. Globally, a good number of nations continue to join the Chemical Weapons Convention, and the main objective is to make sure that chemical weapons are destroyed and no nation uses them during warfare. Thus, as of 2017, only two nations, the United States and Korea, have been confirmed to have a stockpile of different forms of chemical weapons.
