Introduction
“Evaluating Science Communication” by Baruch Fischhoff asserts that effective science communication needs to bring scientists together to make relevant decisions. Additionally, it helps to interpret or translate knowledge into meaningful terms, evaluate the process, and establish an effective two-way communication medium (Fischhoff, 2019). In particular, communicating science effectively entails the collaboration of experts from communities with distinctive practices and norms. Practitioners’ satisficing involves taking into account things that are important and accepting solutions that are imperfect. Fischhoff portrays ways in which organizations with limited expertise and resources can use science communication effectively.
The collaboration between experts involves bringing scientists who are good in different subjects and those who understand how to communicate with people. Moreover, practitioners who create trusted two-way communication media are not left out together with those who can receive and send content through these channels. Herbert Simon’s primary strategies, namely satisficing and bounded rationality are incorporated (Fischhoff, 2019). Bounded rationality entails getting the best solution in a manageable problem subset by ignoring some aspects while satisficing involves searching for an adequate solution by considering all aspects.
Communication Goals
Some communication programs are formed to change human behaviors, such as immunization and voter turnout. In some cases, the goal of these programs is not to change individuals but to empower them so that they can make informed decisions. Successful science communication enables people to change their behaviors even if they have distinctive values. The only way to the success of science communication is by evaluating whether it produces choices that are closer to the ones made by informed decision-makers.
