Sociology Blog Essay: Race, Class, and 'Hybrid' Masculinities
Race, class, and masculinities are social aspects that are common in the sociological field. Race is based on the categorization of an individual by focusing on the social qualities in society (Delgado & Stefancic, 2017). Therefore it defines individual interaction as important in the social world. Class is a component that defines the interaction of individuals based on socioeconomic status (Parkin, 2019). Lastly, masculinity comprises a set of roles, behaviors, and attitudes that defines men and women. The article is based on three elements: masculinity, race, and class. An adequate understanding of the identified elements is necessary for the article analysis. The paper analyzes an article 'Race, Class and Hybrid Masculinities' by drawing social concepts and personal worldviews.
Summary of the Article
The main point of the article is that not all masculinities are dominant. According to Poling (2020), gender may be based on relations and not roles. Whenever gender is defined by embracing the roles, there is an adequate understanding of masculinity beyond the normal definition. Masculinity depends on dominancy instead of quality among men. The article disagrees with the claims of achieving hierarchical relationships by considering females. Instead, it depicts that masculinity is not an innate quality but a practice. Besides, there is the existence of different masculinity; however, they are not similar. Therefore, there is a need to classify masculinity to limit jeopardizing the roles of females in society. Besides, race and class-privileged men may take masculinity as innate, thus neglecting others in social life (Poling, 2020). The key finding noted in the article is that most privileged men participate in hybrid masculinity. Therefore, there is a need for social intervention to advocate for equality among the genders.
Interesting Aspect of the Article
The most interesting idea in the article is hegemonic masculinity. It is an example of masculinity that legitimizes men's dominant position in society. It is interesting since it justifies that masculinity is not fixed but initiated. In most practices in the social world, there is always the belief that masculinity is innate and defined by gender. However, it is interesting how Poling (2020) disagrees with the belief and brings the idea of hybrid masculinity. The idea relates to my own experiences and understanding of the social world. Whenever masculinity is mentioned, all that comes to my mind is the difference between men and women. Therefore, the change of tone in masculinity is a significant a...
