Modernism and Postmodernism
Modernism refers to a utopian vision of the human society in which progress is the goal based on certain ultimate universal truths or principles. WWII influenced this way of thinking, and it called for rational and logical tools to gain knowledge and, in the process, rejected the notions of realism. On the other hand, WWII influenced postmodernism and is characterized by subjectivism, skepticism, and relativism, with an acute sensitivity to ideology as the basis of political and economic structures. Instead of rejecting the conventional styles of prose and poetry like modernism, postmodernism deliberately uses a mixture of conventional styles (COMS520_CHPTR_12). Modernism and postmodernism touch virtually all areas of society. These include literary, aesthetic, economic, philosophical, and artistic elements.
Modernism falls between the period from WWI to the 1970s. Aside from the ones introduced, key characteristics are the rejection of the old and progress towards the new and non-traditional thought in art and literature. At its core is a rejection of tradition and religions in favor of science and rationality. Thus, this system is structural and operates on the assumption that the world has natural forms and concepts applicable universally. In this line of thought, changes have been embraced as a constant because of rapid societal changes. In modernism, artists shunned representation and adopted abstraction as a signal of pushing forwards whatever product or idea was noble and progressive such as mathematical breakthroughs or technological innovations.
