Introduction
The issue of sports and race in the United States is a sensitive issue that most individuals choose not to address. Sports are intertwined intricately with issues of race in the United States. Those who suggest that the whole matter should be neglected posit that the analysis singles out African Americans who take part in sports and treat them differently and often in an inferior manner (Harpalani, 2017). Others also carry out an analysis that asserts that African Americans who participate in sports are physically superior, but they are academically inferior to whites in most cases. In this paper, an emphasis on the participation of African Americans in basketball and one player who has excelled in this sport is given a thoughtful consideration.
African Americans Participation in Basketball
Basketball is one of the most popular sports in the United States. African Americans are highly associated with basketball. African American history participation in basketball dates back to the 1890s. The sport started in 1892 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The involvement of African Americans increased in 1950, whereby this period experienced the most significant number of black professional players in the NBA than any other year (Harpalani, 2017). Some of the individuals who shined greatly during this period included: Chuck Cooper, Bill Russell, and Wilt Chamberlain, among others representing the Black Africans and pioneering their current dominance in the sport. In the 1960s and 1970s, basketball was dominated by African Americans, approximated at 80% of all players. In the 21st century, some of the most notable African American players that have set the highest standards in the NBA are LeBron James and Michael Jordan.
