Question 1 Reid means how Greek athletes were being presented both in art and emotionally by spiritual and physical nature. The harmony and balance seen in images of ancient sportspeople printed on art pieces do not reflect how sportsmen and women appeared. However, it was instead an expression or indication of the desired condition of their souls. Therefore, the representation on images represents the physical while the expression of the wanted conditions of their souls represents the spiritual nature of these individuals. Notably, it happens to be for this purpose that the author discusses the beauty of sports individuals instead of the beauty seen in the physical bodies. After all, the soul happens to be the core of the movement in the thoughts of ancient Greek, and the beauty of athletes, even in a work of art, cannot be separated from the movement. The author also indicates that physical harmony was also shown using arts through body language and facial expression. Classical sculptures of victorious sportspeople do not look identical to the images painted of contemporary winners. The contemporary winners are represented celebrating wildly or smiling broadly with their hands thrust euphorically upwards. Instead, the statues of the ancient winners show serenity and modesty, with their gaze portrayed a bit downwards and to the side, even as they attempt to get hold of their victory ribbons or crowns. Notably, this is another representation of spirituality and physicality that illustrates the author's message to convey to the reader. Nevertheless, the author tries to advise the audience that this should not make them conclude that the traditional Greek sportsmen and women felt different concerning being victorious.
