Although Nationalism was on the rise, sectionalism still played a role in politics during this period. However, sectionalism was an ideology that emphasized the importance of states with different interests and purposes rather than a single, overarching national identity. For example, there were "sectional conflicts regarding tariffs and internal improvements" in 1816. There were also major sectional conflicts between northern and southern states in 1820. However, the concept of localism was more prominent than sectionalism during this period.
Between 1800-1848 witnessed the rise of nationalism in America, with nationalism being more or less dominant than sectionalism. The period began with the formation of the United States in 1776. It lasted until 1848 after American General Winfield Scott won victories during his Mexican-American War, which proved to be decisive for North America. The period was one of the most divisive for America because different states had other interests and purposes (Tyrrell et al.,2021). During this period, the issue of sectionalism was relatively insignificant in comparison to the rise of nationalism.
During this period, nationalists tried to promote their ideology by emphasizing several differences between states within America. These differences, however, were only superficial, meaning that people could still live together peacefully if they were able to come together with the support of each state's respective governments. Furthermore, most Americans identified with a particular region, and most Americans identified with the United States as a whole, which contributed to the fact that nationalism was on the rise.
