The primary objective of idealism is to enhance personality and to ensure spiritual development. Individuals also use it to cultivate truth in real life or career life. John's relationship with politics is quite distinctive; for example, despite the challenges he undergoes while searching for Cathy, he involves in politics to bring change. Obrien uses the images of the Vietnam war and Geneva convention laws to show John's determination towards bringing change. His idealism is evident throughout chapters 15-21, especially in chapters 18 and 19, where he questions the peer commission. In the chapter, John vividly puts the ideology of idealism into perspective; for instance, he uses mirrors to establish real solutions from the mind. Additionally, he is also expecting that Kathy will turn out to live after her disappearance. In chapter 21, carbo functions as a metaphor to present John's anger towards Tony.
