The poem, Still I Rise, by Maya Angelou, is an example of artwork that embodies unique aesthetics in African American literature. Most African American writers like Maya Angelou invoke black aesthetic in their work. African American authors depart from Eurocentric inclination by including elements of advocacy, inclusion, hatred, and equality through expressions. Black aesthetic traces its roots to the 1960s, but it must be noted that this concept transcends time (Gilyard, 2014). It started as a black artistic movement which espoused black culture life; it outlines the struggles, celebrations, and struggles of African America.
