Viwing the Issue/Event through General Education Lenses

Coursework Instructions:

Overview: For the first part of your final project, the critical analysis portfolio, you will select an issue or event in wellness and critically analyze it through the
four general education lenses: history, humanities, natural and applied sciences, and social sciences. By viewing the issue/event through these lenses, you will
gain insight into how the interconnected nature of wellness affects society, as well as both your own individual framework of perception and the choices,
attitudes, and behaviors of others in the world around you.
For this first milestone, due in Module Two, you will select an issue/event to analyze through the four general education lenses. You will explain the issue/event
and its relationship to wellness, as well as describe its connection to all four lenses.
Prompt: First, review the module resources you have so far encountered, as well as your work in Module One. In addition, it is suggested that you visit the IDS
402 Research LibGuide (linked in the Start Here section of your course) for guidance on how to select a topic. Select one issue/event in wellness and write a
paper that addresses how this issue/event fits into the framework of wellness, and then addresses how each lens influences perceptions and attitudes toward
the issue/event, wellness, and society. The paper should outline each lens’s impact and framing of the issue/event. Be sure to provide a working thesis
statement and clear definitions for your key terms.
Specifically, you must address the critical elements listed below.
I. Introduction: You will compile a series of critical analyses of a single issue/event in wellness through the four general education lenses: history,
humanities, natural and applied sciences, and social sciences.
A. Topic: Using the four lenses, explain how an issue/event within wellness has or has not influenced modern society.
II. Lens Connections: In this section of your assignment, you will describe the connections between your issue/event and each of the four general
education lenses.
A. What is the connection of your issue/event to the lens of history for determining its impact on various institutions? Utilize evidence from theory
and research to support your analysis.
B. What is the connection of your issue/event to the lens of the humanities for determining its impact on various institutions? Utilize evidence
from theory and research to support your analysis.
C. What is the connection of your issue/event to the lens of the natural and applied sciences for determining its impact on various institutions?
Utilize evidence from theory and research to support your analysis.
D. What is the connection of your issue/event to the lens of the social sciences for determining its impact on various institutions? Utilize evidence
from theory and research to support your analysis.
Be sure to begin the research process early and use evidence from your research to support your responses. Refer to course resources, the LibGuide for
this class, and any other pertinent resources to support your responses. Although at least two sources are required for each lens, note that you may use
the same source for more than one lens if applicable. Relevant current news sources may be used with instructor approval. Incorporate instructor
feedback into your final project.
Rubric
Guidelines for Submission: Milestone One should be submitted as a 2- to 3-page Word document. Use double spacing, 12-point Times New Roman font, and
one-inch margins. Begin building your references list for Final Project Part One, which requires you to support your responses with at least two sources for each
lens from the assigned course resources or other scholarly sources located independently via the Shapiro Library. Note that you may use the same source for
more than one lens if applicable. Cite your supporting sources in APA style.
Please note that the grading rubric for this milestone submission is not identical to that of the final project. The Final Project Part One Rubric will include an
additional “Exemplary” category that provides guidance as to how you can go above and beyond “Proficient” in your final submission, as well as additional
elements to address.

Introduction
Mental health is a critical wellness issue not only because it entails one’s psychological, emotional, and social well-being, but also because it is one of the most prevalent and misunderstood health concerns. The wellness issue relates to the four general education lenses of history, humanities, natural and applied sciences, and social sciences in various ways. For instance, mental health relates to history through the study of the etiologies and treatments of psychological disorders throughout history, and how this knowledge can inform and advance current mental health services. In a similar manner, mental health relates to the other three education lens in fundamental ways that this essay will highlight in turn.
Lens Connections
History
Mental health relates to the lens of history in that the account of mental illness in America provides a good illustration of the ways in which developments in cultural awareness of mental illness as well as trends in psychiatry throughout history affect national programs and overall awareness of mental wellness. Negative attitudes towards mental illness have permeated history since the 5th century, resulting in stigmatization of persons with mental disorders and ineffectual treatment techniques (Bertolote, 2008). Although recent decades have witnessed significant developments in mental healthcare access and cultural understanding, the history of the evolution of mental health care in the United States is critical to improving the current state of the system, over and above, increase people’s awareness of the wellness issue (Farreras, 2020).
Humanities
Mental health relates to humanities in that through stories, poetry, autobiographies, and narratives that explore lived experiences as well as othered identities, clinicians are able to gain key insights into mental illness and more comprehensive information of their patients. Understanding and treating mental illness requires that health professionals realize the values, relationships, and meanings of mental health issues from the patient’s perspective (Datta, 2016). The humanities provide a tool for exploring these values, assumptions, and meanings that are largely ignored but which give meaning and focus in psychiatry. A narrow focus on brain and biology is not sufficient to fully understanding the causes of mental disorder and therefore humanities is critical to understanding the wellness issue in the context of patients’ lives (Lovett, 2011).
