Health and wellness have been one of the oldest topics in human civilization. Yet we are still far from finding out the truth about several topics that afflict a significant majority of us.
One of these fields that we have yet to understand fully is that of mental health.
Today:
Today, we know that mental health illnesses result from a combination of factors that causes physiological changes in the body. Mainly, modern science has found proof that hormonal imbalances within our bodies may cause this.
However, negative perceptions (i.e., stigma and persecution) of Mental Health issues have their origins in ancient cultures, for example:

  • Ancient Egyptians viewed mental illnesses as a demonic possession

  • Early Romans, Indians, and related Western cultures viewed this as a religious or spiritual problem.


●     Ancient stigma and perception led to barbaric approaches such as “trepanning” (UniteForSight.Org)

Today, we might think that we have already removed these wrong perceptions about mental health. However, studies show that
Mental health illnesses are still some of the most common yet ‘misunderstood’ problems around the world
◦       Statistics:
○     In the World: about 10.7% or 792 million were reported to have a diagnosable mental illness in the year 2017 (Dattani, 2021) 
○     Accordingly, in the United States alone: about 26% of Americans ages 18 and older suffer from a mental health illness (Johns Hopkins Medicine) 
This should signify our need for better approaches and understanding of wellness and mental health illnesses. Yet, as we can see, mental health issues still receive the most incredible stigma related to other illnesses.

Before moving forward, I believe it is essential to understand that mental health problems are global problems.
On the one hand, being a global problem can afflict anyone worldwide. On the other hand, a global problem could also be construed as creating various direct and indirect problems for everyone.
Let me discuss some of the typical direct and indirect problems that afflict not only an individual but the whole society:
○     Economic problems: lack of motivation to work, unemployment, low levels of education (MayoClinic.Org, 2019)
■     First, mental health illnesses affect our economy. One of the most common manifestations of several mental health illnesses is a lack of motivation to get work, anxiety, and others that hinder the individual’s capacity to make a living. Our economy will be affected if this happens ...
