1 Explain what happens when light enters the eye.
Light enters the eyes through the cornea, which refracts it accordingly to pass through the pupil. The iris subsequently enlarges or contracts to regulate the amount of light entering the eyes and reaching the lens, focusing the light rays.
2 What is the retina? Which cells are located on the retina?
This is a thin tissue layer at the back of the eye that receives light and converts it into neural signals that the brain can recognize. It contains photoreceptor cells, ganglion cells, and bipolar cells that carry neural signals.
3 What is the fovea and what does it do?
This is a tiny depression located at the center of the retina. Its role is to provide a sharp central vision that enables the eye to discern the smallest details in images.
4 What are rods and cones and when are they used?
These are the two different types of photoreceptors located in the retina. Rods are active in low light situations, while cones are active in high light levels and enable color vision.
5 How are the rods and cones distributed across the retina?
Cones are primarily distributed around the fovea due to their high visual acuity. On the other hand, rods are located everywhere else around the retina and have the highest population.
6 Explain the purkinje shift.
This refers to the perceived shifting of object color due to changes in light intensity. Therefore, different illumination levels of an object will lead to different color perceptions in the eye.
