The etiologic agent of SARS and the surprising nature of its discovery.
A new coronavirus, eventually known as SARS-CoV, was the etiologic agent behind the SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) outbreak in South Asia in 2002–2003. This finding surprised many people because, up until that point, coronaviruses were only known to infect humans with minor respiratory diseases like the common cold. This specific coronavirus strain caused massive respiratory problems and had a high death rate. 
Preventive and curative methods for treating SARS
SARS is prevented by avoiding contact with infected people, donning protective gear such as gloves and masks, washing hands often, and maintaining excellent respiratory hygiene. Supportive care, like oxygen therapy and mechanical breathing, treats SARS symptoms. Yet, the efficacy of antiviral medications like ribavirin and interferon has been questioned.
