A World of Violence
1. What is Domestic Violence?
One of the most rampant forms of violence in America is domestic violence. It involves family and household members or intimate partners who intentionally perpetrate assault, battery, intimidation, sexual assault, or any other abusive acts against each other. In essence, domestic violence is all about asserting power and control over others and can affect victims physically and psychologically (Section V, n.d.). Perpetrators capitalize on particular unequal power dynamics and tactics to scare or cause physical harm to assert control. In some instances, they desperately use pets, children, or other family members to emotionally traumatize their victims and coerce them to do what they want. Subsequently, victims tend to experience a sense of helplessness, depression, and diminished self-esteem. This kind of violence is indiscriminate since it disregards race, gender, or sexual orientation. Unfortunately, most victims refrain from reporting to authorities for fear of retribution or the belief that law enforcement cannot help.
2. Why is American Society Violent?
Undoubtedly, American society is one of the most violent in the world. A combination of factors contributes to this worrying truism. First, history points to the fact that America as a nation has its foundations rooted in violence. For example, when pushing to expand occupation, they wrestled land from Native Americans through wanton violence (Section V, n.d.). By the same token, Americans used violence against each other to settle feuds during those early years.
