A religious vow of silence is a religious decision not to communicate about an issue or not to communicate for religious reasons. However, if a monk who has vowed a lifetime of silence, for religious reasons, was a witness to a murder and was called on the stand by the prosecution to testify, as a judge:

I would not force this monk to break their vow of silence as a judge. The witness's actions can be considered contempt of the court, especially if there are no exceptional circumstances. For this to be contempt of the court, the following factors would be necessary in his contempt sentencing: the gravity of the offense (murder in this case), the effect of testimony on the trial, contemnor's reasons, whether the contempt is a defiance to the judge, and the traits and antecedents of the monk (Movieclips, 2017).
