The Last Supper is one of the most appropriate artworks by Leonardo da Vinci for the Dominican Monastery. The core purpose of the artwork is to represent the last scene of Jesus together with the disciples. Leonardo reveals the consternation that occurred among the disciples after Jesus announced that one of them would betray him. In The Last Supper painting, the artist created an effect of Christ and the apostles as an extension of the refectory, which is appropriate based on eating during the last supper. Christ is at the apostles’ center based on the panting composition while his body forms a triangular shape. The Last Supper is one of the outstanding masterpieces of the Italian High Renaissance that illustrates the last days of Jesus with his disciples.
The Last Supper painting is one of the most impactful and allegorical artworks of the renaissance period. The subtle and dramatic effect of the rectangular picture makes it attractive in illustrating a moment when Jesus realized that one of his disciples would betray him. According to Motta et al., the piece of art is naturalistic and deep as Jesus sits with his disciples for supper (p. 7). Although the depiction seems to be a straightforward piece of art, its dramatic focus and mathematical symbolism make it quite complex. The last supper is an ideal example of the aesthetics of the High Renaissance. The painting measures 15 *29 feet to occupy the end wall in Santa Maria convent’s dining hall.
According to Leonardo, gesture, posture, and expression manifest themselves in the mind’s notion, with each disciple in the painting reacting in a manner that is fit for a man’s personality. As such, the artist reveals human emotion in a simple composition. The critical subject of the portrayal is a popular choice of refectory monastery walls where monks and nuns had meals in the presence of the final repast of Jesus (Motta et al. 6). Notably, Leonardo’s version is neatly organized, with Jesus at the center of an extensive table while the apostles are at his right and left. The portrayal scene is an effective representation of successive moments when he declared a forthcoming betrayal from one of his disciples.
The painting is attractive based on the serene composure of Jesus with his head and eyes lowered, which contrasts with the apostles’ agitation. Accordingly, the varying postures of Jesus and the apostles’ fall extend and intertwine into three groups. In the art, peter, identified by a knife, moves towards John, who sits at the right hand of Jesus. The Last Supper is in an austere room to ensure that viewers focus on the foreground’s actions. Corbett argues that Leonardo uses a linear perspective in representing space in the painting that involves linear perspective as a rediscovered technique during the renaissance based on parallel lines that converge at a vanishing point (P. 36). As such, the painting has an illusion of depth in a flat space. Leonardo placed a vanishing at the right hand of Jesus to draw the attention of viewers.
