The Renaissance Art Exhibition
The Last Supper is one of the most appropriate artworks by Leonardo da Vinci for the Dominican Monastery. The core purpose of the artwork is to represent the last scene of Jesus together with the disciples. Leonardo reveals the consternation that occurred among the disciples after Jesus announced that one of them would betray him. In The Last Supper painting, the artist created an effect of Christ and the apostles as an extension of the refectory, which is appropriate based on eating during the last supper. Christ is at the apostles’ center based on the panting composition while his body forms a triangular shape. The Last Supper is one of the outstanding masterpieces of the Italian High Renaissance that illustrates the last days of Jesus with his disciples.
The Last Supper painting is one of the most impactful and allegorical artworks of the renaissance period. The subtle and dramatic effect of the rectangular picture makes it attractive in illustrating a moment when Jesus realized that one of his disciples would betray him. According to Motta et al., the piece of art is naturalistic and deep as Jesus sits with his disciples for supper (p. 7). Although the depiction seems to be a straightforward piece of art, its dramatic focus and mathematical symbolism make it quite complex. Accordingly, the varying postures of Jesus and the apostles’ fall extend and intertwine into three groups. In the art, peter, identified by a knife, moves towards John, who sits at the right hand of Jesus. The Last Supper is in an austere room to ensure that viewers focus on the foreground’s actions. Corbett argues that Leonardo uses a linear perspective in representing space in the painting that involves linear perspective as a rediscovered technique during the renaissance based on parallel lines that converge at a vanishing point (P. 36).
